Founded in 1954 by Dr. Cosmo Paone, Suburban Eye Institute has been a trusted name in eye care for generations. Later led by Dr. Laura Lukaszek, the practice continued to serve the Berkeley Heights community with dedication and compassion.

As of 2025, Suburban Eye Institute enters a new chapter under the ownership of Drs. Vivian Lu and Derek Vuong. As the third owners in the practice’s long-standing history, we are honored to continue its legacy of exceptional optometric care. Our mission is to blend the values of personalized, community-focused service with the latest advancements in eye care technology.

Alongside Suburban Optik, the optical store next door, we offer patients convenient access to a wide selection of eyewear. Our dedicated team of eye care professionals is here to ensure that every patient leaves our office feeling cared for, informed, and confident in their vision.

Meet Our Staff & Eye Doctors

Our doctors and staff strive to give you and your family the highest quality of care possible. We are always willing to help in any way we can. To ensure you receive the most up-to-date care and information, our doctors regularly attend continuing education classes. We utilize the latest technology and keep up-to-date with the current treatments and trends for all of your eyecare needs.

Dr. Derek Vuong 

Dr. Derek Vuong is a dedicated optometrist with a passion for providing high-quality, personalized eye care. As a Los Angeles native, Dr. Vuong has a Bachelor of Science degree in General Biology from the University of California, Riverside. He then went on to pursue a Doctorate of Optometry degree from Western University of Health Sciences, where he graduated with academic honors. He was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society. During his time at Western University, Dr. Vuong was an active member of various organizations, honing his leadership skills and commitment to advancing the field of optometry. Dr. Vuong is particularly interested in expanding his knowledge of private practice ownership, with the goal of offering a personalized, patient-centered experience. He is dedicated to the continuous improvement of his clinical skills and stays up to date with the latest advancements in optometry to provide his patients with the best care possible. 

Dr. Vivian Lu

Dr. Vivian Lu is a devoted optometrist with a passion for helping her patients achieve optimal eye health and vision. Originally from New York City, Dr. Lu went to the University at Buffalo where she graduated cum laude with a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacology and Toxicology and a minor in Health and Wellness. She then went on to obtain a Doctorate of Optometry Degree from Western University of Health Sciences, where she graduated with academic honors. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Kappa Honor Society. Throughout her optometry education, Dr. Lu was actively involved in various organizations, such as Lions Club and Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity. As part of her commitment to providing care to underserved populations, she participated in a clinic trip to Fiji, where she provided essential vision care to those without access to proper healthcare. Her interest in optometry includes, binocular vision, dry eyes, and speciality contacts. She hopes to develop her skills in contacts further.

Recently Retired – Dr. Laura Lukaszek 

Dr. Laura Lukaszek is a New Jersey native, who graduated from Albright College with her Bachelor of Science in Biology. She then went on to the Pennsylvania College of Optometry where she graduated with her Master’s in Visual Science, and then went on to receive her Doctor of Optometry in 1990. She graduated with Academic Honors and was awarded the Clinical Excellence Award, and the Bausch & Lomb Contact Lens Excellence Award. Dr. Lukaszek enjoys raising and training Seeing Eye puppies—she has trained 8 Seeing Eye puppies to date. She also likes to camp and travel with her husband and 3 children! Dr. Lukaszek has recently retired after being in practice for over 25 years. We want to thank her for her dedication to the community and we wish her a happy, well-deserved retirement! 

Dr. Brian Mackey

Dr. Brian Mackey holds a Doctor of Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry and is Board certified to practice in the state of New Jersey. He has been in practice for over two decades and has faithfully been serving the community as an Optometric Physician at Suburban Eye Institute since 2001. His concentration is in contact lenses and corneal refractive therapy.Prior to joining the Suburban family he was Director of Contact Lens at Fisher Swale Nicholson Eye Center in Bourbonnais, IL. He was also a primary care Optometric Physician at Millennium Eye Care in Freehold, New Jersey before finding his optometric home here in Berkeley Heights. With an active listening style, a calm approach to patient care, and keen attention to detail, Dr. Mackey provides comprehensive eye assessments in a relaxed and interactive environment. When not serving his patients, Dr. Mackey can be found traveling with his wife Marla. They also enjoy cheering on their two school age boys at a hockey rink, on the baseball field, or at track and field events.

Retired – Dr. Brenda Lynly

Dr. Brenda Lynly is a Pennsylvania native who graduated from Gettysburg College with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. She continued her studies at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry where she received her Masters in Visual Science and Doctor of Optometry degrees. Following graduation she completed a residency at Omni Eye Services in Baltimore, MD. She was a lead optometrist at Kaiser Permanente in the Washington, DC area before relocating to New Jersey in 1996, and joined Suburban Eye Institute in January 1997 where she continued her professional career until she retired.

Josephine Bonetti

Josephine Bonetti has been serving the eyecare needs of the Berkeley Heights community since 2005 when she found her home here with the Suburban Eye Institute. She has been a pillar in our office ever since. Josephine works tirelessly to keep our office running smoothly and to make sure each of our patients has the best experience and care. Josephine is known in the office for the hands on work she has done with her patients by assisting in various testing, as well as teaching patients how to properly care for and wear their contacts. Josephine works with insurance companies handling all coding, billing, and submitting needs. She keeps up to date on the latest information and news by following up with webinar training videos, as well as attending the Vision Expo in New York City each spring. Born in Jersey City, Josephine moved to Italy when she was a teenager, where she lived for fifteen years before returning to the states again. During this time she learned to speak fluent Italian. She hopes to someday retire back to her home in Italy. Josephine grew up in her family owned restaurant business, giving her the customer service experience that she carries with her to this day. In her free time, Josephine enjoys cooking, baking, and shopping. Every Sunday, Josephine and her family sit down to a traditional Italian style Sunday Dinner. She has just recently welcomed the newest addition to her family: her adorable Maltese purebred, Annie.

Elena Keegan

Elena Keegan joined the Suburban Eye Institute in February 2022, and has been a longtime resident of the Berkeley Heights Community for the past 24 years. She is a wife and devoted mother of two children. Both her children attended the Berkeley Heights school system up until their college years. Her husband also grew up in Berkeley Heights.

Elena graduated with a Bachelors of Science Degree in education from Montclair State College(University). She worked for Gibbs College for over 10 years as a computer teacher and as a substitute teacher in the Berkeley Heights school system while raising her family. In addition, Elena has employment experience in many fields such as administrative support for companies in the computer and construction fields.

Elena’s vast experience allows her to wear many hats at our practice as she is very motivated, personable and a self starter in anything she does. She is a great asset to work on our team here at Suburban Eye Institute.

While not at work, Elena enjoys gardening, cooking, exercising and vacationing. Her favorite times are when she can spend time with her family and dog.

Fran Tedesco

Fran joined the Suburban Eye Institute family in February 2022. She has been a long-time patient of Dr. Lukaszek’s and has always admired the practice and its staff. For the past 31 years, Fran and her husband John, and their three children Jessica, Katie, and John have called Berkeley Heights their home. Before raising her family, Fran was a Travel Consultant for Travelong Travel Agency. Travelong provided Fran with the opportunity to fulfill her passion for travel, which she and her family still enjoy today. The best part of working for Suburban Institute for Fran is her day-to-day interaction with all the wonderful patients who come into the office. Fran especially enjoys helping with their pre-screen eye testing prior to seeing their doctor. When not at Suburban Eye Institute, Fran can be found gardening, walking along the surf of the Jersey Shore or playing with her menagerie of pets including her 2 Cockatiels, Chloe and Shadow, her adorable shih-poo Bean who thinks he’s a human, Katie’s cat Cleo, and Jessica’s dog Mason.
