The Suburban Eye Institute was started in 1954 by Dr. Cosmo Paone. Currently owned and operated by Dr. Laura Lukaszek, our optometric practice in Berkeley Heights, NJ serves patients of all ages with the latest in technology. In addition to optometric services, we work closely with Suburban Optik, the optical store adjacent to our office, for your eyeglass needs. Our kind, caring, and knowledgeable eyecare professionals of Suburban Eye Institute and Suburban Optik strive to make sure our patients are happy and healthy when they leave our office.

We utilize the latest technology and keep up-to-date with the current treatments and trends for all of your eyecare needs.
Dr. Laura Lukaszek
Dr. Laura Lukaszek is a New Jersey native, who graduated from Albright College with her Bachelor of Science in Biology. She then went on to the Pennsylvania College of Optometry where she graduated with her Master’s in Visual Science, and then went on to receive her Doctor of Optometry in 1990. She graduated with Academic Honors and was awarded the Clinical Excellence Award, and the Bausch & Lomb Contact Lens Excellence Award. She has been in practice for over 25 years. To keep up to date with the latest in treatment and technology, Dr. Lukaszek regularly attends continuing education classes. She is a member of the American Optometry Association, NJ Society of Optometric Physicians, Mid-Jersey Society of Optometric Physicians, and is a Certified Member of Paragon CRT Contact Lens Eyecare Professionals. When she is not caring for her patients Dr. Lukaszek enjoys raising and training Seeing Eye puppies—she has trained 8 Seeing Eye puppies to date. She also likes to camp and travel with her husband and 3 children!
Dr. Brian Mackey
Dr. Brian Mackey holds a Doctor of Optometry from the Illinois College of Optometry and is Board certified to practice in the state of New Jersey. He has been in practice for over two decades and has faithfully been serving the community as an Optometric Physician at Suburban Eye Institute since 2001. His concentration is in contact lenses and corneal refractive therapy.Prior to joining the Suburban family he was Director of Contact Lens at Fisher Swale Nicholson Eye Center in Bourbonnais, IL. He was also a primary care Optometric Physician at Millennium Eye Care in Freehold, New Jersey before finding his optometric home here in Berkeley Heights. With an active listening style, a calm approach to patient care, and keen attention to detail, Dr. Mackey provides comprehensive eye assessments in a relaxed and interactive environment. When not serving his patients, Dr. Mackey can be found traveling with his wife Marla. They also enjoy cheering on their two school age boys at a hockey rink, on the baseball field, or at track and field events.
Dr. Brenda Lynly
Dr. Brenda Lynly is a Pennsylvania native who graduated from Gettysburg College with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology. She continued her studies at the Pennsylvania College of Optometry where she received her Masters in Visual Science and Doctor of Optometry degrees. Following graduation she completed a residency at Omni Eye Services in Baltimore, MD. She was a lead optometrist at Kaiser Permanente in the Washington, DC area before relocating to New Jersey in 1996, and joined Suburban Eye Institute in January 1997. In 2011 Dr. Lynly and her husband John moved to Finland when he took another position within his company. They returned to New Jersey at the end of 2013 and she resumed her role here in 2014. She says the best part of returning to the practice is reconnecting with so many of her previous patients. Dr. Lynly provides thorough, detailed eye examinations and believes that listening to her patients is the most important part of the exam. Dr. Lynly and her husband are the proud “parents” of two German shepherds. In their spare time they love to golf and travel.
Josephine Bonetti has been serving the eyecare needs of the Berkeley Heights community since 2005 when she found her home here with the Suburban Eye Institute. She has been a pillar in our office ever since. Josephine works tirelessly to keep our office running smoothly and to make sure each of our patients has the best experience and care. Josephine is known in the office for the hands on work she has done with her patients by assisting in various testing, as well as teaching patients how to properly care for and wear their contacts. Josephine works with insurance companies handling all coding, billing, and submitting needs. She keeps up to date on the latest information and news by following up with webinar training videos, as well as attending the Vision Expo in New York City each spring. Born in Jersey City, Josephine moved to Italy when she was a teenager, where she lived for fifteen years before returning to the states again. During this time she learned to speak fluent Italian. She hopes to someday retire back to her home in Italy. Josephine grew up in her family owned restaurant business, giving her the customer service experience that she carries with her to this day. In her free time, Josephine enjoys cooking, baking, and shopping. Every Sunday, Josephine and her family sit down to a traditional Italian style Sunday Dinner. She has just recently welcomed the newest addition to her family: her adorable Maltese purebred, Annie.
Nicole Edelmann, CPO
Nicole Edelmann, Certified Paraoptemetric (CPO), was born and raised in New Jersey and has lived locally most of her life. She was awarded her CPO in 2013, and has been continuing her training in hopes of obtaining additional certifications in this field. She has been working in the field of Optometry since 2009, and has truly found her passion for the field and patient care since she started with the Suburban family in 2013. She keeps current on the latest information and technology by attending seminars and attending Vision Expo held in New York City each spring. Nicole works hard to make sure that each of her patients have the best experience possible from the moment they walk through the door. She assists in the office by helping with patient intake as well as the checkout process. Nicole can frequently be seen assisting the doctors with testing. She also instructs patients in learning how to properly care for and wear their contact lenses. In her free time, Nicole enjoys spending time with her son George and her family. She enjoys cooking, baking, and traveling, as well as spending time at the beach or by the pool.
Alyson Schwarz, CMA
Alyson Schwarz, CMA, was born and raised in New Jersey and has lived locally all her life. She received her credentials as a Certified Medical Assistant in March of 2018. She is new to the field of optometry and likes it very much. She feels it is something new, interesting, and different from her previous work fields. In the office you can often find her assisting patients with the check in/check out process, she also assists the doctors with additional testing using the various machines in the office. In her free time she enjoys going to baseball games, camping, and hiking. She also has two dogs and a cat whom she loves very much.
Jessica has worked with the Suburban Eye family since 2012 where she started out as our file scanner. Today she has worked her way up to being an optometric technician. Jessica is attending school at West Chester University of Pennsylvania pursuing a degree in Psychology. She hopes to use her experience as an optometric technician to further her education in Low Vision Occupational Therapy. Jessica enjoys volunteering at the Vision Loss Alliance of New Jersey in Denville and with the Morristown Seeing Eye as a Seeing Eye Dog Puppy Raiser. In her free time, Jessica enjoys hiking, participating in her university’s marching band, and traveling.
Sabrina is a Yellow Labrador Retriever/Golden Mix and the 7th Seeing Eye puppy that Dr. Lukaszek and her family have raised. The Lukaszek’s got Sabrina at about 7 weeks old and will likely have her until she is between 12-16 months of age, at which time she will go back to The Seeing Eye for her formal training. The job of a puppy raiser is to socialize the dog and expose them to various environments. Sabrina has already been to college football games (navigating the bleachers like a pro), hotels, noisy parades, the post office, bank, and even kayaking! On occasion, you will see her in the office “helping”! The Lukaszek’s are proud to have had a hand in the training of these immensely important service animals. To date, the Lukaszek’s puppies have been placed with blind people in Texas, California, and Massachusetts.
